The US Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Industry and Security (“BIS”) and Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (“OFAC”), as part of a “coordinated enforcement effort”, have imposed a combined $3.3 million in civil penalties against Microsoft Corporation for apparent violations of US export controls and sanctions. (BIS’s administrative penalty was $624,013 while OFAC’s fine was set at $2.9 million.)
