Cultivating empathy has helped me be both a more effective trade compliance lawyer, as well as a better person.
The proverb generally goes that before you judge others you should walk a mile in their shoes. When I was a boy, my mom had a little plaque on our kitchen wall with the idea framed as Native American wisdom: “Grant that I may not criticize my neighbor until I have walked a mile in his moccasins”.
In whatever incarnation, these words of wisdom admonish us to cultivate empathy for others...
